George IV arrived at Howth after an uncomfortable crossing very much the worse for wear from drink. The highlight of his trip was his visit to Slane and its chatelaine the plump and companionable Marchioness Conyngham. Neither the monarchy nor the government capitalised on the manifest enthusiasm displayed by the populace towards the visit.
