This piece was commissioned from the artist as a gift for the late Tomás MacAnna, playwright, theatre director and actor, on the occasion of his retirement from the post of National Director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
The image of Queen Maeve hunting with her wolfhound was designed as the Irish National Theatre Society logo by Elinor Mary Monsell. The original woodcut was published on the programme cover for the Abbey Theatre in 1904.
