William Sadler II (1782-1839)
View from the Phoenix Park Towards Dublin
Oil on panel, 35 x 56cm (13¾ x 22")
From his vantage point at the Magazine Fort, Sadler sets out a sweeping panorama of Dublin. The River Liffey winds past Islandbridge toward the grand Royal Hospital Kilmainham, while the Wellington Obelisk rises proudly above the trees. In the foreground, a coach and horses dash along the park road, adding movement and life to the scene. Blending careful topographical detail with lively incident, Sadler captures the city as both a place of grandeur and everyday bustle.
