Jason Ellis (20th/21st Century) The Alchemist's Egg Carrara marble and 22ct gold leaf on an Egyptian lime stone base, 30cm high (including base) This is a stunning sculpture by Cornwall born Jason Ellis, demonstrating the high quality materials and finish he preferences. The polished surface of the marble and delicacy of gold leaf show an understanding and respect for the media, which no doubt he acquired during his time studying sculpture in Sussex in the mid 1980s and subsequently while working in the conservation profession. Ellis cites the work of modern masters Constantine Brancusi, Barbara Hepworth and Gerda Fr?mel as sources of inspiration for his own practice, yet it is Brancusi's influence that is seen most prominently in ''Egg'', with clean lines and repetition of form the dominant features. Ellis now works in Ireland and has sculptures in the State Art Collection and the Bank of Ireland Collection. He is currently working on a major public sculpture commission for University College Dublin. The work, over seven meters high, is due to be installed at the Belfield campus in spring 2008.
